How to Choose the Right Paint Finish

Paint finish — also called sheen — affects how a surface looks, how it cleans, and how it holds up. Choosing the right finish for each surface is part of what makes a paint job perform. The same color in different sheens can look completely different and wear differently over time.

Flat finish has no sheen. It hides surface imperfections well, which makes it a good choice for ceilings and for walls in low-traffic areas. The downside is that flat paint is harder to clean — rubbing a flat wall can burnish it, leaving a visible shiny spot. Flat is standard for ceilings and for walls that don't get touched.

Eggshell has a soft, low sheen. It's the most common wall finish for living areas because it cleans better than flat while still hiding minor imperfections. Eggshell is a good default for walls in bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways.

Satin has a bit more sheen than eggshell. It's more durable and cleanable, which makes it a good choice for high-traffic walls, kitchens, bathrooms, and kids' rooms. Satin stands up to scrubbing better than eggshell, but it also highlights surface imperfections more.

Semi-gloss is a higher sheen, used primarily for trim, doors, and cabinets. It's very durable and cleanable, which is why it's the standard for baseboards, door casings, and window trim — surfaces that get touched and need to clean easily. Semi-gloss on walls is usually too much sheen for most rooms, but it's right for trim.

For cabinets, a durable enamel — often satin or semi-gloss — is the right choice. Cabinets need to withstand daily use, grease, and cleaning, so a harder, more cleanable finish is essential. The finish is part of what makes a painted cabinet hold up over time.
